St.John's National Academy of Health Sciences was founded in 1963 by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) 'to provide for the relief of suffering, to promote and preserve the health of the community and to give an example of enlightened training in dedicated service, which is characteristic of Christian educational and social welfare institutions.'

Aim

Through this institution, the Catholic Church seeks to make a significant contribution to medical education and service, the improvement of which is a primary need of the Country. In this endeavour, its constant aim is not only to train medical, paramedical and nursing students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and orient them to the current needs of the Country, but to undertake the training of teachers, specialists, reasearch workers, health administrators, pastoral care personnel and community health workers for the overall advancement of the science of medicine and its effective application.

As a primary means for the achievement of the institution's objectives, emphasis is placed, in the selection of students, on their character and commitment to values necessary for a broad-based and sound intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical and social education.

The Academy consists of five units:

St.John's Medical College

St.John's Medical College started in 1963, offers graduate, postgraduate, diploma and super specialty degrees recognized by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore. The high quality of academic and research work attracts grants from different parts of the world.

St.John's Medical College Hospital

The 1200-bedded St.John's Medical College Hospital with staff strength of approximately 2000 is now a major referral center in the Country. Started in the year 1975, the hospital offers specialty and super specialty services, including state-of-the-art diagnostic and lab facilities to ensure the delivery of holistic patient care.

St.John's College of Nursing

Nurses trained in the College of Nursing exemplify steadfastness to the highest standards of integrity, moral values and belief in holistic health. St.John's College of Nursing, started in 1980 as a School of Nursing and upgraded to the status of a College in 1989, offers diploma, graduate and postgraduate courses in the field of nursing.

St. John's Research Institute

The St.John's Institute of Population Health and Clinical Research, started in the year 2004, conducts cutting edge research in nutrition trials, population studies and health policy relevant to the needs of our country. One of the key functions is to train personnel in research methodology and break new ground in health studies.

St.John's Institute of Health Management and Paramedical Studies

The St.John's Institute of Health Management and Paramedical Studies strives to train persons in the field of health care management and paramedical related areas like - Medical Records Management, Clinical Pastoral Care, Hospital Aides etc. In addition to these, several in-house and on-the-job training courses are also conducted.

Facilities

St.John's campus is a varitable township with facilities for board and lodge, sports and games and recreation. The verdant campus provides an oasis in tumultuous environement of Bangalore city. 30 acres of land are set apart to provide comfortable residences for the staff. Adequate number of hostels house the students of the colleges.

Annexe

Visitors, patients and elective students are provided with accommodation within the campus. Two hospital annexes, one with 150 rooms for patients and bystanders, another with 200 rooms for visitors and elective students take care of the accommodation needs.

Auditorium Sports

A Sports and Games Complex with courts for basketball, tennis, throw ball, volleyball, cricket, hockey and soccer is laid out in the sprawling campus of the hostel section. A 1200-seater auditorium, dedicated to the alumni/ae of the St.John's with two conference halls and an amphitheater provide the stage for the cultural and literary activities of the staff and students.

Library

There is a well-equipped ane well-furnished library - the Zablocki Learning Centre - with approximately 30,000 books and 7000 journals, apart from CDs, dissertations, reprints and Internet facilities.

Directorate Chapels

The life, work and services of St.John's, which was founded as a monument to the International Eucharist Congress held in 1964 in Bombay, revolves around the Eucharist: the Eucharist in the tabernacle and the broken body of Christ in the patients entrusted to its care. There are five chapels on the campus and dedicated chaplains and pastoral care ministers taking care of the psycho-spiritual needs of the staff and students and the patients, irrespective of their creed. The presence of around 500 religious sisters and fathers instills an aura of spiritual ambience in the campus. There are daily masses and evening holy hour in the main chapel of the hospital everyday of the year.

Rural Training Centre

One of the hall marks of the training at St.John's is the emphasis it places on rural orientation and community health. About 30km away from the college, in the village of Mugaloor, St.John's owns a rural training centre, where students of both Medical College and College of Nursing are hosted for training.

Other Facilities

Banks, Post Office, Public Call Centres, Internet Browsing Centres and other such facilities are provided for in the campus.
