Problem Based Learning (PBL) Facilitators Workshop
Department of Medical Education
The Department of Medical Education, SJMC is conducting a Problem Based Learning (PBL) Facilitators Workshop on 23rd and 24th Jan 2019. This workshop will provide an overview of PBL and will focus specifically on the role of the facilitator. It is intended for individuals new to PBL with some experience of medical teaching. Participants can expect to take on the role of the student for part of the workshop.
Problem based learning (PBL) is an educational method that is centred on the discussion and learning that emanates from a clinical problem. The small group setting used in PBL encourages an inquisitive and detailed look at all issues, concepts and principles contained within the problem. It is a way of learning which encourages deep understanding rather than mere superficial coverage of information. In the process of working in groups, students also learn valuable skills such as effective communication, teamwork, and leadership. These skills are not often emphasized in the formal curriculum, but are essential to becoming a competent clinician. The time spent outside of the group setting facilitates the development of skills such as literature retrieval, critical appraisal of available information and the seeking of opinions of peers and specialists. Problem based learning encourages students to become more involved and responsible for their own learning.
At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:
• Define PBL as a learning method.
• Explain the potential role of PBL in the existing undergraduate medical curriculum.
• Appreciate the challenges faced by facilitators and students who are involved in a PBL program.
• Effectively facilitate a PBL group.
• Develop necessary content for a PBL program including triggers, tutor guides and assessment forms.
• Plan the development of an institute relevant curriculum that integrates PBL into the existing scheme of undergraduate medical education.
