Overview - Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery is one of the oldest Surgical Super Specialty Departments in St. John’s Medical College Hospital which was started way back in 1981. It has grown enormously over the past 4 decades and is now a major teaching and training Department.
Currently headed by Dr. Shailesh A V Rao, it presently has four other faculty members – Dr. Rajesh R. Raykar, Dr. Pratham R. Bysani, Dr. J. Adesh and Dr. Sibhi Ganapathy. It has a MCI approved MCh program under aegis of RGUHS. Postgraduates join our Department on a regular basis and have been very successful.
We have around 30 common ward beds besides Private wards, Neuro ICU, Neuro ITU etc. The Department runs OPDs on every working day, both in the Morning and in the Evening. We have ‘round the clock’ Emergency services.
Elective Neuro Operation Theatres function from Monday to Saturday. We run around 2 elective OTs every working day. Almost every day we admit 2 to 3 emergency patients and operate around 1 to 2 patients as emergency. Altogether we perform around 75 to 80 neurosurgeries a month.
Our Department was one of the first to start Spinal Instrumentation way back in early 1990s. Over the next few decades several new procedures such as Navigation guided surgery, complex Minimally Invasive Spine surgery, Neuroendoscopy, Stereotactic surgery, Pituitary surgery, Cerebrovascular neurosurgery, Functional surgery, Epilepsy surgery were successfully performed.
Our long-term focus is on complex innovative brain & spinal surgeries which are cost-effective, affordable, and safe for our patients. We also stress a lot on teaching & training of our residents.
Neurosurgery Department has been doing yeoman services for a long time, serving all sections of the society. Traditionally, besides Karnataka, we have had patients from the neighboring states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Over a period, we have regularly catered to patients from Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Bangladesh, Nepal and several other places.
