St John's Medical College

Services - Paediatric Surgery

Over the years, clinical protocols were drafted and streamlined. Besides core pediatric urology and neonatal surgery, the department initially specialized in anorectal malformation, hepatobiliary surgery and portal hypertension. The first Paediartic liver transplants of South India were conducted here in 2000. Later subspecialty clinics (Paediatric Nephrourology Clinic- 2000, Hydrocephalus Spina Bifida Clinic – 2000, Paediatric Gender Clinic - 2005) were started and minimally invasive surgery introduced (2002).The Paediatric Renal Transplantation program is supported by Paediatric Nephrology. A long term follow up of spina bifida is conducted at the St.John’s centre for children with special needs - the Unit of Hope.

Today, it is a national referral centre for the diagnosis and management of Hirschsprung disease & allied disorders. Other niche areas of the department include Paediartic urology, hydrocephalus & complex spina bifida and disorders of sexual differentiation.
