Overview - Neonatology

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. John’s Hospital, the first unit to be established in the state of Karnataka under the stewardship of Dr.Swarnarekha Bhat completed its Silver Jubilee in the year 2015. It is recognized as a tertiary referral centre for high risk newborn care. It is a 30 bedded unit with 12 high dependency beds catering to both intramural and extramural babies.The department caters to about 2500 annual deliveries. We have achieved single digit Neonatal Mortality Rate and have a good multidisciplinary neonatal follow up services for the high risk NICU graduates.

The Super Speciality Department of Neonatology came into separate existence from the year 2011 and is the first and currently the only department in the state to train DM Neonatology students. The Fellowship in Perinatal medicine is also being offered under RGUHS and we train four students per year.

The unit is well equipped with state of the art equipment like ventilators including high frequency, inhaled nitric oxide, nasal CPAP, HFNC, multichannel monitors, SET pulse oximeters, cooling devices, T piece, ABG analyser, Giraffe & transport incubators, USG/Echo machine etc.

We were the first unit to start ROP screening in the country, offering in house laser therapy and to start universal hearing screening.
