Training and Education - Paediatrics


Undergraduation:
St Johns medical college is educating students in under graduate studies of medical field since last 50 years. Students are posted in pediatrics department from the 2nd year of their under graduation. They are trained under the guidance of professors with more than 25 years’ experience in teaching. Students are exposed to myriad of patients, which accounts for an academic feast. They also get hands on for procedures, initially on the manikins in skills lab, later to perform the acquired skills on patients under the assistance of professors. Students also join the consultants in history taking, examination as well as counselling. Professors are the role model, who imbibe values, ethics in the students during the foundation years of the students’ life. All students are encouraged to participate in other academic activity such as Quiz, poster competitions etc. Meritorious students are encouraged by awarding them with certificate at the graduation day.

Postgraduation:
Postgraduation in Pediatrics is available since last 40 years. Over the past many decades pediatric department has expanded to include many subspecialities in pediatrics. These include Neonatology, Pediatric intensive care, pediatric nephrology, pediatric hematooncology and pediatric endocrinology. Postgraduates get rotated in all these specialities. They are trained under the guidance of professors with more than 25 years’ experience in teaching.

Postgraduates are frequently assessed by the faculty. Feedback is given at the end of the assessment. Remedial measures to increase the performance of slow learners is given at the same time.

Postgraduates are encouraged in various other activity like poster and paper presentation in conferences, case presentation competitions. Interested students are also involved in research activity.
