Neonatology
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. John’s Hospital is one of the first neonatal units to be established in Karnataka and completed its Silver Jubilee in 2015. It is a leading tertiary referral centre for high-risk newborn care in Southern India, providing comprehensive care to both intramural and extramural newborns.
The NICU currently has 30 intensive care beds and 12 high-dependency beds, supported by a dedicated 7-bedded Mother–Newborn Intensive Care Unit (MNICU), the first of its kind in South India. The unit is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities for advanced neonatal intensive care.
In keeping with the mission and vision of St. John’s, we strive for excellence in neonatal care. Our outcomes, with NICU survival exceeding 90% and neonatal mortality of less than 4 per 1000 live births, are comparable with those of leading centres. With the continued support of the hospital management and the Medico-Social Work Department, we endeavour to ensure that no child is denied appropriate care because of financial or social circumstances.
Training & Education
The Super Specialty Department of Neonatology was established in 2011 and is the first department in Karnataka recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to train three DM Neonatology students every year.
The department provides a comprehensive academic environment with structured postgraduate and super-specialty training, bedside teaching, simulation-based learning, multidisciplinary academic programmes and opportunities for national and international exposure.
Research & Innovation
Research is an integral component of our clinical and academic mission. Our research programmes span clinical research, translational research, community-based interventions and quality improvement initiatives.
The department houses the Centre for Advanced Research in Community Neonatology and an ICMR Centre of Excellence, providing a platform for collaborative research, capacity building and innovation in neonatal and community health.
Human Milk Bank
The Human Milk Bank provides safe, screened and pasteurized donor human milk for eligible newborns when mother’s own milk is unavailable or insufficient. The service also promotes breastfeeding, lactation support and human milk donation.
Parents attending follow-up visits are advised to bring the baby's discharge summary, investigation reports, vaccination records and previous medical documents.
The Department emphasizes safe, compassionate, evidence-based and family-centred neonatal care, with active parental participation in the care of every newborn.
The follow-up and early intervention services focus on growth, feeding, neurodevelopment, developmental milestones and early identification of health or developmental concerns in high-risk infants.
Community Outreach
The department has been actively involved in training, mentoring and outreach education in collaboration with the Government and non-governmental organisations.
Our community neonatal initiatives focus particularly on high-priority districts of Karnataka, where we mentor healthcare personnel working in Special Care Newborn Units (SNCUs) and support them in strengthening the quality of newborn care.
Through these partnerships, we aim to bridge the gap between tertiary neonatal care and community-level newborn services and contribute to improving neonatal outcomes across the state.
Excellence in Neonatal Care
With a legacy spanning several decades, the Department of Neonatology at St. John’s combines clinical excellence, advanced technology, compassionate care, education, research and community engagement.
Our vision is to continue building a centre of excellence in neonatology that not only provides state-of-the-art care to critically ill newborns but also advances knowledge, develops future leaders in neonatology and contributes meaningfully to improving newborn health in India.
The Department of Neonatology provides comprehensive care for preterm, high-risk and critically ill newborns, including:Intensive and high-dependency care for preterm and high-risk newbornsManagement of VLBW and ELBW infantsAdvanced respiratory support including CPAP, non-invasive and mechanical ventilation including High frequency ventilationManagement of neonatal sepsis and serious infectionsManagement of neonat...
