Overview

Anatomy

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) also known as Physiatry takes a comprehensive and holistic approach to help individuals regain maximum possible function, independence, and quality of life following injury, illness, or disability.

Our department functions through an interdisciplinary team led by a Rehabilitation Physician (Physiatrist), working in close collaboration with Rehabilitation Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Prosthetists and Orthotists, Medico-Social Workers, and Custom Footwear Specialist. Together, they design and implement individualized rehabilitation programs tailored to each patient’s medical, functional, and psychosocial needs.

What makes our centre unique is the continuum of medical care provided by our Physiatrists—integrating acute care, post-acute rehabilitation, and long-term functional reintegration. The department emphasizes team-based care, ensuring seamless coordination and continuous feedback between disciplines, thereby achieving optimal functional outcomes for every patient.

Since its inception in 1999, the department has evolved into a comprehensive rehabilitation hub, offering specialized services across diverse domains of medicine, including neurological, musculoskeletal, spinal cord injury, paediatric, geriatric, cardio-pulmonary and pain rehabilitation.

Guided by evidence-based practices and patient-centered values, our mission is to empower every individual to move better, function independently, and live with dignity.
The Department has been offering a three-year NMC-recognised postgraduate MD (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation) program since 2012, admitting two candidates annually through the national entrance examination.
