Program for Visiting Students at St. John’s Medical College (Electives )


Over one hundred visiting elective students and observers visit St. Johns each year from overseas, staying for 1-3 months on an average.

Visiting Students come from all over the globe:

St. John’s Medical College offers the following programs for visiting students:

- Elective student program or clerkship for overseas medical students

- Observership (for overseas public health students and pre-medical students)

- Fellowships and Short -term training for overseas and Indian doctors

Elective student program or clerkship for overseas medical students

Elective students may rotate in any of the 45 departments (pre-clinical/para-clinical / clinical) of their choice, for a minimum duration of one week each. The total clerkship duration may not exceed 3 months.

Observers may rotate only in the department of Community Health. Pre-med students are accepted as observers for upto one month, whereas public health students may choose to remain for a longer duration in the department of Community Health, if they plan to assist with research.

Opportunities for visiting elective students include:

Observe and participate in various health care services and activities at St. John’s Medical College Hospital

- Visit outreach health centres of St.John’s, both in the rural and urban areas, and observe health care in resource-poor settings with a focus on social and cultural determinants of health.

- Visit government hospitals and observe the functioning of the public sector in health care.

- Learn about the structure, functioning and challenges of various health systems in a developing country like India

- Participate in departmental academic programs - lectures, seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, bed-side teaching.

- Mentoring in research by faculty at St. John’s or participation in ongoing research is possible for students who visit for a minimum of three months.

Interested students may apply for an elective / observership at St.John’s at least 6 months before their planned arrival, in order to complete necessary paperwork and obtain government and medical council permissions.
