College of Nursing

The story of St Johns begins in the early 1900s, when the role of the Catholic church in health care in India first took root.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) established St. John’s Medical College in Bengaluru in 1963 with the aim of training healthcare personnel committed to serving the poor and the marginalised under the influence of two great women , Dr Agnes McLaren from Scotland who was moved by stories of the plight of Indian women who on account of the purdah system died in large numbers during childbirth since they would not be seen by male doctors and Dr. Sr. Mary Glowery, from Melbourne, who felt the need of this specialty to provide care for the women in India.

Both realized that the problem of lack of doctors in India, Dr. Sr. Mary Glowry founded the Catholic Hospital Association of India (CHAI). in 1943, and it was she who planted the seeds of the creation of a Catholic Medical College that would be distinguished by its values, ethics, and commitment to service.

Thus, in 1963 Catholic Bishops Conference of India found the dream of a Medical College realized under the title St. John’s Medical College, by 1994, the five institutions on campus came under the umbrella of St Johns National Academy of Health Sciences. St. John’s Medical College, St. John’s Medical College Hospital, St. John’s College of Nursing, St. John’s Research Institute and St. John’s Allied Health Sciences.
