CNGI – Catholic Nurses Guild of India

Introduction: The Catholic Nurses Guild of India (CNGI) emerged in response to the call from the Catholic Bishops Conference of India and the Holy See in 1956. Its establishment aimed to unite Catholic nurses, both lay and religious, under a common spiritual purpose, guiding their professional practice and community service in alignment with Catholic principles.

Purpose and Objectives: The primary objectives of CNGI are multi-faceted, encompassing moral protection, the application of religious and moral principles in professional settings, personal sanctification within the nursing profession, and various aspects of apostolate, including promoting and protecting life in all its forms, respecting human dignity, and providing compassionate care to all individuals.

International Affiliation: CNGI is affiliated with the International Committee of Catholic Nurses and Medical Social Assistants (CICIAMS), operating within the Asian region. CICIAMS shares similar missions with CNGI, focusing on coordinating, promoting, respecting, protecting, and representing Catholic nurses globally.

Membership: Membership in CNGI is accessible through diocesan units, institutional affiliations, or individual applications. Every Catholic nurse, irrespective of gender, marital status, or professional standing, is encouraged to become a member. Membership options include regular or lifetime memberships, each requiring associated membership fees.

National Structure: CNGI operates across nine regions in India, with each region conducting regional conventions every four years based on international themes. Establishing a diocesan guild involves obtaining approval from the diocesan Ordinary, appointing a Spiritual Director, and forming a committee comprising key positions such as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Ecclesiastical Advisor.

Annual Enrolment Program for Catholic B.Sc. Nursing and GNM Students The Catholic Nurses Guild of India (CNGI) organizes an annual enrolment Program aimed at Catholic B.Sc. Nursing and GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) students. This program serves as an avenue for welcoming new members into the guild and fostering a sense of community among Catholic nursing students.

Enrolment Ceremony: The program commences with a formal enrolment ceremony where new Catholic nursing students are officially welcomed into the CNGI family. This ceremony often includes holy mass, prayers, blessings, and an introduction to the mission and values of CNGI.

Activities: CNGI's activities encompass spiritual, educational, and social aspects. Spiritual endeavours include recollections, adoration, and retreats, while educational initiatives involve workshops covering various nursing-related topics. Social outreach efforts include home care for the needy, disaster relief, health education, and regular meetings and training programs.
