Postgraduate Resudency Program
The primary goal of St. John’s Medical College, Department of Dermatology is to provide residents in training a high quality educational and service experience in the discipline of dermatology. The program draws its strength from the combined resources of the various speciality departments in the hospital. Our teaching program in dermatology is a model of inter-departmental cooperation in the delivery of medical services and in medical education. Our faculty are dedicated not only to the imparting of factual knowledge, but to fostering and instilling a commitment to a process of lifelong learning, thereby inculcating qualities of respect, good judgement, patient advocacy, and the confidence to face the challenges that may appear long after successful completion of the training program.

The Dermatology Training Program is fully approved by the Rajiv Gandhi University and the Indian Medical Council for three years of postdoctoral training. The admission to this course is highly competitive and each year only three candidates are chosen for the program.

Dermatology residents are required to participate in research work during residency and demonstrate the ability to communicate their findings in either the thesis or dersertation form or in presentations at national, local or regional meetings.

Most of the clinical training of residents takes place in the department of dermatology. The combined bed capacity of the hospital approaches 1200. A total of 35 beds are exclusively designated for dermatology inpatient care in addition to available beds in the medical intensive care and private wards. The total number of outpatient visits in Dermatology (excluding emergencies) exceeds 50,000/year.

The postgraduate resident undergoes a six month “external rotation” in dermatology allied speciality departments of the institution such as: Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Plastic Surgery, Department of Pathology, Department of Microbiology, & Department of Emergency Medicine.

DERMATOPATHOLOGY
The dermatopathology experience consists of weekly Dermatopathology teaching conferences, clinic-pathologic correlation, and a rotation for senior residents. At the weekly dermatopathology teaching session, known glass slides pertaining to the weeks' chapter are provided to the residents for review and presentation. Junior and senior residents discuss and present unknown slides. Patients' biopsies are routinely reviewed with a dermatopathologist or pathologist at the department of Pathology.

Dermatology & Dermatosurgery Observership
The Observership Program in Dermatology is designed to provide opportunities to enhance knowledge in general dermatology and dermatological subspecialties, increase understanding of advances in dermatology and dermatosurgery, and provide exposure to outpatient and inpatient management of a variety of dermatological disorders in a tertiary care referral hospital, one of the foremost training centers in the India. The department's general and specialty clinics provide primary and consultative dermatologic care to over 50,000 ambulatory and hospitalized patients yearly. A pre-requisite to this program is formal documented training in dermatology at least equivalent to a Diploma or MD degree in dermatology or in another subspecialty or area of interest relevant to the practice of dermatology.

Dermatosurgery Fellowship program
The aim of the fellowship programme is to provide basic and advanced training in Dermatosurgery to holders of post graduate diploma or degree in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, who would be able to independently perform the Dermatosurgical techniques and follow all pre and post operative measures, in the best possible way.
