Maternity Care for Women in Bangalore City (1900-1947)
Project Description
The aim of the project is to understand the history of medicalisation of childbirth in the city of Bengaluru, and the shift in the cultural belief of how births in hospitals were safer than home births. It invovles the study of the past to understand the social developments around maternity and childcare in Bengaluru urban area. We use a historical approach with a feminist lens in interpreting archival texts. These include: official government gazettes, administrative and medical records, along with lay and popular sources such as women magazines, advertisements and newspaper articles.
