The Portrait Film as a Reflective Process of Ethical Discourse: Film Making Workshops
Project Description
The making of a film, especially in a documentary context, creates a new connection and understanding between the filmmaker and their subject. These include a sensitive approach to interacting with people, questions about representation, consent, truth, subjectivity and the complexities that arise when ideals are to be translated into practice (Blum, 1991). The process of filmmaking thus has great potential to facilitate self-reflection on the theme of ethics and compassion.
This project aims to:
- Enable a reflective process among medical / nursing students, researchers and faculty on ethics encountered or experienced and to narrate these stories as films
- Produce small films that can be used in teaching of ethics, to trigger discussion and further reflection
The project will consist of multiple workshops across 8 sessions covering three modules: one for camera, one for sound and one for editing. The end outcome will be short films of 2-5 minutes which will be exhibited and discussed by the participants and invited persons.
