Gastroenterology
Overview - Gastroenterology
The department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology was introduced as a separate department in 1983 with Dr. Patrick S. Kamath as the Chair (Head of the department). The department has come a long way since then. We were the first in the state to introduce Diplomate National board training in Gastroenterology in 2009 followed by DM training 2012. The department is known for its excellent, all round contribution to training fellows in all aspects of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. We have an active endoscopy department and close to 8500 endoscopic procedures of various kinds are performed each year. Around 23,000 patients visit the OPD per year and 1800 patients are treated as inpatient basis. Even the most underprivileged have an open access to the doors of the department 24/7.
