Neonatology
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. John’s Hospital, is one of the first units to be established in the state of Karnataka completed its Silver Jubilee in the year 2015. It is recognized as a tertiary referral center for high-risk newborn care in Southern India. It is a 30 bedded unit with 12 high dependency beds catering to both intramural and extramural babies. In accordance to the mission and vision of St. John’s we strive for excellence & our NICU survival of >90% & neonatal mortality rate of < 4 per 1000 live births are comparable to the best centers. With support from the management and Medico social work Department, we try to ensure no child is denied care under any circumstance.
Training
The Super Specialty Department of Neonatology came into existence from the year 2011 and is the first and currently the only department in the State recognized by NMC to train three DM Neonatology students per year.
Research
We consider research as an integral part of our work and our research areas of interest range from clinical research to community intervention projects and various quality improvement projects.
Community outreach
We have been actively involved in training and outreach education along with the Government and NGOs in high priority districts of Karnataka where we have mentored district health care workers at special care newborn units ( SNCU) at the local units to improve quality of newborn care.
