Plastic Reconstructive Surgery & Burns
The Department of Plastic, Reconstructive Surgery and Burns at St. John’s Medical College Hospital, established in 1976, is one of the oldest and most respected departments of the institution. Built on a strong foundation of service, teaching, and ethical practice, the department has evolved into a regional centre of excellence in reconstructive surgery and comprehensive burn care.
The department provides 24×7 emergency services for trauma and burns, along with daily outpatient clinics, supported by 26 dedicated inpatient beds, exclusive operating theatre access, and full ICU backup. A dedicated Burns Ward with individual rooms offers advanced burn care, including early tangential excision and cadaveric skin grafting from approved skin banks.
Academic excellence remains a core strength of the department. The NMC-recognised MCh Plastic Surgery programme, initiated in 2001, currently offers two seats per year. The department also actively contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate training, while hosting national and international elective students.
Over the years, the department has pioneered microsurgery, developed specialised services including craniofacial surgery, and maintained a strong culture of structured academics and clinical innovation. The department has received prestigious recognitions, including the Kempegowda Award (2009) and the Innovation Award in Clinical Services (2021).
Guided by a tradition of compassionate care, the department remains committed to delivering high-quality, affordable treatment, advancing surgical education, and upholding the ethical values that define St. John’s Medical College Hospital.
