Certificate Course in Cytogenetics

Aim: Certificate course in cytogenetics is a skill based and technical course for Life science, medical and para- medical students who want to purse cytogenetics as a career.  

Eligibility: Post graduate Students of Life Sciences, Medical Laboratory technicians, PhD, MBBS, Post graduates.

Fee structure : Indian national: Fee: Rs: 30,000/- payable at one time. After Dean’s approval, the candidate is requested to pay at the college accounts department. Payment receipt will be given after the payment.

Foreign Nationals: Rs:50000/-

Duration of the course: 3months

Food/Accommodation: Not provided

Vacation: no vacation

Timings: Monday to Friday (9 am-4.30pm)

                Saturdays: (9 am to 1.00 pm)

Attendance: 80% 

Plan of program: Each module the trainee will gain the necessary skills to perform cell culture process, slide making and microscopically analyze peripheral blood samples, bone marrow samples, perform chromosome analysis, and utilize FISH (Fluorescence in-situ hybridization) to identify cytogenetic abnormalities. Digital Imaging, interpretation and reporting of results based on ISCN for each of the distinct sample types represented.  Theory underpinning each module is taught over with practical classes. The diagnostic techniques and diagnostic interpretations learned at Division of Molecular Biology and Genetics, will empower the students to pursue cytogenetics at different levels in diagnostic labs and medical colleges across country. 

Techniques Learned: Sample culture setting for peripheral blood, bone marrow samples, sample harvesting, slide preparation, GTG banding, Principles of each technique such as Karyotyping and FISH. Karyotyping and FISH panel for Hemat-Onco including CD138 plasma cells extraction and 

 

Karyotyping Standardized peripheral Lymphocyte culture.

FISH analysis for multiple myeloma, FISH for micro deletion syndromes, FISH for X/Y enueploid, FISH, SRY gene deletion.

The course also includes probe selection, validation, and quality controls in FISH and Karyotyping. FISH analysis and signal interpretation for each of the leukemia panels. Reporting patterns based on ISCN. 

Certification: Institutional certificate will be provided to students taking up the course, based on their performance evaluation, assignments and internal assessments and 80% of Attendance 

Note: Prenatal testing is under the scope of this course.
