Description
This course demonstrates the degree to which human health is dependent upon planetary health. Participants will gain an understanding of what it means to live in the Anthropocene – a time of extreme environmental crisis - as explained through the Planetary Boundaries framework. Students will learn of the underlying structural factors inherent in our economic and political systems that have brought about this state of affairs. Through an analysis of the global food system, students will discover that the many ecological, health and social crises which appear to be discrete are, in reality, deeply linked. Finally, participants will learn of innovative and lasting ways in individuals and organisations are working to provide sustainable healthcare, keeping in mind patient as well as planetary health.
Objectives of the course:
As professionals at the forefront of a health crisis unleashed by rising pollution levels, increased temperatures and other natural disasters, this course is intended to
● educate healthcare professionals about the nature and origins of the climate crisis
● expose participants to solutions pioneered by doctors and healthcare workers
● inspire participants to consciously inculcate sustainable practices in their professional (and personal) lives
