Trends in maternal mortality in India
Abstract
With giant strides in medicine and technology, womendying of something as natural as childbirth should bean extremely rare event. It is therefore shocking toread that nearly 3,00,000 maternal deaths occur in theworld each year, translating to one woman dying ofchildbirth every 2 minutes. 1 in every 16 women dieof childbirth in Sub-Saharan Africa, as compared to 1in every 4000 women in developed nations. A sixth ofall maternal deaths in the world occur in India alone. This article details the trends in maternal mortality in the last century and the causes of maternal mortality.
