The Department of Medical Oncology at St. John’s registers, on average, 1,000 new patients each year, reflecting its pivotal role in cancer care within the region. Outpatient services see nearly 12,000 attendances annually, demonstrating the department’s extensive reach and commitment to ongoing patient support.

A comprehensive day care service operates within the department, administering approximately 500 chemotherapy and targeted therapy infusions each month. This facility ensures that patients receive timely and effective treatments in a supportive environment.

The department’s offerings encompass routine oncology-related diagnostic tests and stem cell transplants. In 2023-24, the department advanced its therapeutic capabilities with the introduction of state-of-the-art treatments, including use of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CART), immunotherapy, antibody Drug Conjugates (ADC), and bispecific antibody administrations.

To deliver holistic and tailored care, the department has established organ-based tumour boards. These multidisciplinary panels facilitate comprehensive cancer management and informed decision-making for all patients presenting to the Oncology Centre.

The academic programme, initiated in 2025, admits two DNB Medical Oncology candidates per year. Additionally, the department actively engages in research, both independently and through collaborative efforts, contributing to clinical and investigator-initiated trials aimed at advancing cancer treatment and patient outcomes.
