Overview - Cardiology

The Department of Cardiology was started in 1984 under the leadership of Lt Gen G R Narayan. We were one of the first institutions in the state to introduce Interventional cardiology in 1995 with the inauguration of the cardiac catheterization laboratory in 1995. From 1995-1998 and from 2001-2010, Wing Commander Dr S S Iyengar was the Head of department, Dr. Pradeep K Shetty from 1998-2001, and Dr CB Patil from 2010-2013. Dr Kiron Varghese took over leadership of the Department from 2013 till date. The department has been training students for the MCI approved 3-year DM Cardiology program since 2000. The Department has had its share of academic activities in the form of International research trials, CME programs for MD and DM students and training of elective foreign students. It is one of the few departments with a Poor Patients Fund and many patients receive highly subsidised treatment. As far as possible, lifesaving treatment is not withheld for any patient for lack of funds. Besides this, the Department is well known for the range of coronary and peripheral vascular interventions which are routinely being performed since 2002. The staff have several publications to date apart from numerous published abstracts and presentations at national and international conferences. The Department prides itself on its patient friendly and student friendly atmosphere conducive to the well being of patients, staff and students.
