Department of Critical Care Medicine

Introduction
The Department of Critical Care Medicine was established in 2010 growing from an intensive care unit which had been established in 1990. This speciality of Medicine caters to looking after critically ill patients from medical and surgical specialities with life threatening conditions and multiorgan failure requiring comprenhensive and constant monitoring often not possible in the regular wards.

We run a 30 bedded ICU with sophisticated equipment in the 2nd floor of the Silver Jubilee Block building. We provide round the clock evidence based and affordable care to our patients with our dedicated team of qualified intensivists, critical care nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians and medical social workers. It is also a centre of academic excellence with a prestigious DM Critical Care programme and active involvement in research with many publications in nation and international journals to its name.

Work at ICU
The patients are given care by qualified intensivists, resident doctors and nursing staff .The department has its own evidence based protocol to provide quality care at all times to critically ill patients. The patient care is provided by dedicated team of doctors and nurses in shifts and written handover of information between physician to physician and nursing staff to nursing staff to avoid any miscommunication. The department has monthly scheduled departmental meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings. The patient data are captured at frequent intervals for ensuring patient safety improving patient care.
Scheduled routine medical audits are done in various aspects of patient care and protocols are revised and newer policies would be implemented.

Activities
ASTriCC: (Advanced Simulation Training in Critical Care Medicine)

St. John’s ICU has a Advanced Simulation training program which runs twice a year to train the critical care students using advanced ICU Simulator. This interactive session will cover core topics in respiratory physiology and hemodynamic monitoring; ultrasound, heart-lung interactions and complex ICU scenarios will give hands on experience using the simulator.
And we are proud to say that the Advanced ICU Simulator was designed by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru in collaboration with the Department of Critical Care Medicine.

Simulation training for an in-house staffs:
As we have a dedicated Advanced ICU simulator, which was designed by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru in collaboration with the Department of Critical Care Medicine, we routinely conduct training program for doctors, nurses and other para medical staff members.
